Hyperscale Campus. Delivered On Programme in Germany
Integrated engineering. Digital coordination. Hands-on site support. That’s the Black & White Way.
- Sector
- Hyperscale Data Centre
Overview
Frankfurt is one of Europe’s most active data centre markets and one of its most regulated. For this 500MW+, 20-data-hall campus, Black & White Engineering delivered across the full design and construction journey, from Stage 2 through to detailed design, bringing integrated engineering, digital coordination and hands-on support to every phase.
The result is a high-performance campus delivered on programme, built to the client’s exacting specifications.
The Challenge
Local requirements presented a series of interconnected constraints that needed careful resolution. Generator sizing, heat-rejection plant placement, emission limits and noise thresholds all required alignment with German regulatory standards and with construction already underway, the window for redesign was tight.
The priority was clear: resolve every constraint without compromising the client’s performance requirements, redundancy targets or programme commitments.
Our Approach
Direct local engagement
We established direct coordination our architectural partner to achieve a successful building permit, whilst navigating an existing BImSchG ensuring that the designed MEP systems worked with an existing BImSchG permit.
Precision MEP Redesign
Our mechanical and electrical engineering team reworked the design to satisfy local requirements while maintaining the client’s revised performance targets, whilst not impacting an existing BImSchG permit. The result was a solution that met all regulatory obligations whilst reducing cost and complexity.
Digital Co-ordination at Scale
CFD and PipeFlo simulations were used to validate the design decisions before implementation, ensuring confidence at each stage and reducing risk during construction.
Integrated Construction Support
Our on-site and design teams worked in close collaboration throughout construction, preserving design intent and resolving emerging issues in real time keeping the programme on track and the client fully informed.
The Result
- Full regulatory compliance achieved without compromising redundancy or performance standards
- Design Stages 2, 3 and 4 completed to programme
- Tender package issued with full regulatory approval in place
- Construction progressing to practical completion with the campus performing to specification
- Client confidence maintained throughout, underpinned by proactive communication and transparent problem-solving
