Sustainability. An engineering imperative

Our approach to sustainable data centre engineering goes further than labels. We engineer measurable reductions in energy, water and carbon across the full lifecycle of every facility we deliver.

Engineering sustainability that supports your project goals

Sustainable data centre engineering at Black & White is not a separate workstream. Sustainability is embedded in how we engineer, from site selection and building orientation through to cooling strategy and energy source. Our team spans mechanical engineering, building physics, geography, mathematics and architecture, giving us the breadth to see how every element of a design connects, competes and influences overall performance.
That integration has to start early. The decisions that determine a facility’s carbon footprint, energy source and long-term efficiency are made at Stage 0. Stage 2 is the absolute latest point at which they can still be meaningfully influenced.

How we engineer for sustainability

Our approach is structured around three pillars aligned with our ESG framework and the commitments that run across every project, every office and every partnership.

Our Global Engineering and Research & Development teams are the technical engine behind our sustainability capability, translating emerging low-carbon technologies into scalable, site-specific engineering designs. From advanced energy and thermal modelling to embodied carbon analysis and grid-interactive systems, we ensure sustainability is integrated from the first design decision, not considered after the fact.

Every sustainable data centre engineering model we produce supports better performance and lower environmental impact. We optimise PUE, WUE and CUE across our project portfolio, design for waste heat utilisation as standard, and develop liquid cooling models that the industry’s software tools don’t yet offer, working directly with manufacturers to build what doesn’t exist.

Our Net Zero commitment is one we have made for ourselves, not just for our clients. By 2030, the goal for Black & White’s global operations will be Net Zero with progress independently third-party assured annually. Every office is located near public transport, regional hubs minimise long-haul travel, and our supply chain is held to the same standards we set internally.

We hold our sub-consultants to our code of ethics from onboarding and are developing a materials specification that addresses embodied carbon at source. What we commit to, we measure. What we measure, we publish.

We partner with clients, supply chains and industry bodies who share our sustainability goals because the transition to a lower-carbon built environment cannot be made in isolation. Our certification expertise spans every major global framework, and our engineering-led ESG advisory gives developers the tools to meet regulatory, investor and planning requirements across every market we operate in.

Our Global Academy invests in the next generation of engineers who will carry this work forward  Our sustainability team deliberately draws from a broad spectrum of disciplines, because the problems we are solving are too interconnected for any single specialism to see whole.
