Discovering a career in electrical engineering design

After graduating in 2024 and completing an internship, Dana explored different pathways within engineering before focusing on design.

“I did not initially plan to go into design, but after my internship and further learning, I realised this was the path I wanted to follow. Engineering offers many directions, and discovering design made me more interested in developing solutions.”

Her search for a role led her to Black & White Engineering and the data centre sector.

“When I came across Black & White Engineering, I saw their focus on data centres. I did not know much about the sector at first, but I became interested because it is something unique and growing. Designing for data centres was also something special that I did not see in many other consultancies. With the rise of AI, data centres are becoming more important, and I wanted to be part of that.”

Growing confidence in a supportive team environment

The culture at Black & White Engineering has played an important role in not only Dana’s professional development, but in her personal development and softer skills.

“Before I first started working at Black & White, I was a little bit shy, and I didn’t have great communication skills. When I joined, I noticed that the team is very welcoming and supportive. From the beginning, they encouraged me to speak out, ask questions and share ideas.

The company works across different regions and projects, which gives me the opportunity to learn from others and understand how teams collaborate globally. That support and experience have helped me improve my communication and confidence.”

Making meaningful contributions from day one

“I am given the opportunity to share my ideas and contribute solutions, even as a graduate. The team supports me to communicate these ideas clearly, including presenting them to clients, which has really helped build belief in my abilities.

It can be challenging at times, but that support makes a big difference. I enjoy being involved in the work, contributing to tasks each day and learning from different electrical engineers, especially the senior team.”

Building a future in engineering

Looking ahead, Dana is focused on continuing to grow her skills and take on more responsibility.

“I want to build confidence in making my own decisions and continue learning about data centre design. I am also interested in understanding other disciplines to develop a broader view of engineering.

Working closely with experienced engineers has encouraged me to think beyond my current role. It has helped me see a clear path for progression, where I can continue to develop my skills and, over time, grow into a more senior position.”

Dana offers this advice for anyone thinking about a career in engineering:

“Engineering is about solving problems and thinking in a practical way. If you enjoy that, you can succeed in this field. This is a place where you will learn, be supported and develop your career. The team believes in you and helps you grow from the start.”
