From university into the engineering industry

Beginning a first job can feel uncertain, but structured support helped John transition into the business with confidence.

“Being employed in Black & White Engineering is my first job after finishing my studies. The onboarding process provided a smooth and welcoming environment which I vividly remember to this day. We were given everything we needed to start, and the HR team clearly explained what to expect from day one. Having onboarding buddies, mentors and supportive line managers made it easier to settle into the role.”

Learning through live project exposure

With early exposure to projects and collaboration across global teams, John quickly began building both technical and professional skills.

“What I enjoy the most about my day-to-day work is the strong focus on working relationships and socialising with our colleagues. Alongside this, I enjoy the nature of the work, tackling challenges, working with different teams across different regions and working across a variety of projects. Having that exposure early on makes the role really rewarding and allows me to see my progress over time.

After a year of experience, I have developed a stronger focus on detail. Understanding how different systems connect within a building has shown me how each part contributes to the overall design.”

A culture built on collaboration

For John, the culture at Black & White Engineering plays a key role in supporting development and performance across the business.

“The culture at Black & White Engineering is built on delivering quality work while maintaining professionalism, integrity and respect. This has helped me grow as part of a team and improve how I approach my work. The company promotes continuous learning from within, supported by experienced team leads, which helps us to achieve and maintain high standards, delivering high-quality work.

I have also had the recent opportunity to visit our Singapore office, and the team welcomed me warmly This experience made me felt like I am really part of our one global team.”

Developing a long-term career in data centre engineering

Looking ahead, John is focused on continuing to build his skills and take on more responsibility.

“Looking ahead I see my career developing by handling more complex tasks and solving challenges with simple and innovative solutions. My goal is to become a design mechanical engineer and eventually lead my own team and projects.”

For those considering a graduate pathway in this industry, John’s advice reflects his experience so far:

“If Black & White Engineering aligns with your passion, the environment will encourage you to challenge yourself more than ever and grow your career as part of one global team.”
