Milan Multi-Site Campus Data Centre Project

Black & White Engineering served as Lead Designer for a multi-site engagement spanning Milan and surrounding municipalities, delivering complete design and permitting services through RIBA Stage 4. The programme required a consistent design framework across multiple locations while accommodating the specific requirements of each site.

The Brief

The appointment covered campus masterplanning through to full RIBA Stage 4 design and permitting across multiple sites. With eight data halls per site and a block redundant electrical topology, the design needed to deliver both technical rigour and flexibility across a geographically dispersed programme.

Campus Masterplanning

Black & White led the masterplanning process across the full campus, establishing a coordinated framework that could be applied consistently across sites while accommodating local planning and permitting requirements at each location.

Standardised Technical Design

A standardised electrical and mechanical design approach was applied across all sites enabling design efficiency and consistency without rigidity.

Permitting Across Multiple Jurisdictions

Permitting services were managed in-house across Milan and surrounding municipalities, navigating local authority requirements at each site as part of the integrated design programme.

The Result

• Over 45MW IT capacity across multiple sites, delivered through a single integrated programme
• Campus masterplan completed, providing a coordinated framework across all locations
• Full RIBA Stage 4 design completed across all sites

• Design features include LV generators, electrical power pods and air-cooled chillers with 6+1 block redundant topology
