An international move made possible
When Robbie joined our Edinburgh office, it was in its early stages of growth.
“I joined the Edinburgh office when it was just starting up. I was employee number four. It was an opportunity to help build something from the ground up, which was exciting in itself.
From the beginning, I made it clear that working internationally was something I wanted to do. I didn’t know exactly when it would happen, but I wanted that opportunity to be there. That openness meant we could have honest conversations about what my career path might look like.”
After building his experience in Edinburgh, that ambition became reality in 2022 when Robbie relocated internationally to Dubai within the business.
“The company walked me through every step of the process. They provided support and advice whenever I needed it. The team were incredibly welcoming, which made the whole move a lot easier.”
End-to-end project exposure in mission critical infrastructure
Global data centre engineering careers often benefit from exposure to full project delivery, rather than working within a single discipline. For Robbie, his progression has been defined by trust and exposure to a broad range of work.
“I was given the opportunity to lead projects from very early on in my career. Being trusted with that level of responsibility helped me grow massively as an engineer.
I’ve had exposure to everything from early-stage due diligence and test fits through to RIBA Stages 2–4 and working with contractors. I feel like I’ve been able to experience the full project lifecycle rather than being confined to one niche area.
That breadth of experience is huge for your development in engineering. It’s a credit to Black & White that you’re given that trust and variety early on.
I’ve worked on data centre developments across multiple regions. Being part of global conferences and world-class critical infrastructure projects has given me exposure I wouldn’t have had elsewhere.”
Being part of a global collaborative network of engineers
Relocating internationally has also reinforced what it means to work within a global engineering design consultancy.
“I moved from working at a local company in the UK to joining a truly global business. Since I’ve been here, Black & White has grown massively opening new locations and expanding our international presence.
It’s an environment that breeds success. You’re surrounded by a team who are here to excel and make the most of opportunity and that mindset pushes you to raise your own standards.
Because of Black & White’s global footprint you’re connected to multiple regions. You can work on projects across Europe, the Middle East and beyond from one base. That global connectivity is only getting stronger as the company continues to grow.
That opportunity to work with a truly global team, across different regions and time zones, is one of the real strengths of the business.”
Five years on and still growing
Reflecting on nearly five years with Black & White, Robbie is clear about what has kept him committed.
“You really do get out what you put in here. If you’re willing to step forward, take responsibility and be open to opportunities, they’re there.”
While career progression was always a key driver, the personal impact of Robbie’s move to the UAE has been just as significant.
“It offers everything in one place. Career progression, global exposure and lifestyle. It’s a dynamic place to live and work, with a strong professional community and a wide range of world class experiences outside of work. There’s something for everybody. That’s what makes it special.
If you’re thinking about international experience within critical infrastructure, I’d say go for it. The opportunities are real, the support is genuine, and it’s been brilliant for my development both at work and beyond.”
