Choosing a career in engineering

“What first sparked my interest in engineering was my family. Many of my family members work within the engineering sector, which influenced and encouraged me early on. This led me to study a Level 3 Engineering BTEC and A-Level maths, which then led me to completing my Level 4 Building Services Engineering Course through the apprenticeship programme offered to me here at Black & White Engineering.”

Finding the right place to start his apprenticeship

From the outset, Elliot was looking to complete his apprenticeship in an environment where he could develop his skills, be hands-on and be part of a strong team.

“Black & White’s vision is what clearly led me to applying for the apprenticeship. I had seen that my values and skills aligned very well with the vision and core values of the company. I was looking to be practical and hands on within my first engineering role. Being part of a strong team and working collectively with others was really what I wanted to do. Black & White achieved this very well, introducing me to projects within the first three months and allowing time to collaborate with others. This helped my progression massively.”

Learning and development through real project experience

“The onboarding process at Black & White was streamlined and really eased me into the business. I started by using the online training platform to develop my software skills and engineering knowledge, then moved onto a training project which helped me understand how services are coordinated within a model. Having close contact with my line manager and colleagues really supported my transition.”

Since then, Elliot has continued to build a broad range of skills through day-to-day work.

“There are many key skills which I have developed and implemented in my time working at Black & White. Throughout my time here I have developed by my communication, teamworking skills, technical software skills and problem-solving skills and I continue to develop these every day!”

Gaining global experience

“My biggest learning experience so far has been the amazing opportunity to work in the Manila office for three weeks. I was able to see firsthand how teams collaborate and understand their workflows. This will be very useful when working together on future projects. When working as one global team I have also been able to work on projects with different offices and work on a variety of projects at different stages. This has enabled me to build my network within the business, collaboratively working with people from around the globe. This experience helped me to further develop my professional skills and gain more confidence in my abilities.”

Building a career in data centre engineering

“A clear pathway has been discussed with me on my next steps at Black & White. The development at the company is seamless, helpful, and encouraging which makes your time at the company so exciting.”

For those considering an apprenticeship or graduate role, Elliot’s advice is clear:

“I would 100% recommend applying to the company, and once successful, to fully embrace each opportunity that is given to you. I understand that the company is so caring, eager to help, encourage development, and always listen to what you have to say . So speak up and share your goals as I’m certain they will find a way to achieve!”
