Choosing a graduate pathway at Black & White

“The adaptability of Black and White Engineering stood out to me and made the graduate pathway an exciting opportunity that I was keen to be involved with. I was looking for an opportunity that would allow me to build on existing knowledge from university, whilst also tailoring my skills to align with industry requirements. I recognised that the business was transitioning to meet the demand of the ever-evolving data centre market and contributing to this would allow me to develop a set of valuable skills, experience and knowledge.”

A smooth transition from university into working life

“The culture at Black & White Engineering is very supportive, which is important when transitioning from university into a professional role. The onboarding process was very easy and encouraging and made me feel like a valued member of the team from my first day. The culture here makes it easy to approach colleagues for advice and support, which has been crucial for my progression during my graduate pathway, and has allowed me to perform at my best.”

Opportunities to collaborate and learn from others have also helped Ben build his network.

“Participating in learning week and graduate sessions has been a great way to connect with colleagues, understand different approaches to challenges and gain advice from experienced people across the business.”

Developing skills on the job

“The business has provided software specific training which has proven extremely beneficial for my technical understanding and improved my confidence when working on project related tasks. I have also found our Continuous Professional Development sessions valuable for remaining up to date with emerging technology in the industry.

Whilst I have gained a wide range of technical skills so far, I feel my soft skills have developed significantly since joining the graduate pathway. Being involved with various projects from day one has meant that my communication and time management skills have grown alongside technical ability to meet the requirements of my role.”

Take the next step into data centre engineering

For those considering a graduate role at Black & White, Ben highlights the importance of curiosity and willingness to learn.

“If you enjoy solving complex engineering problems, this is a great place to start your career. You do not need to know everything about data centres before joining. You will be supported by a knowledgeable team who will guide you throughout your apprenticeship or graduate journey and help to apply your strengths.”
